Dear Friends and Neighbors,
“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times”.
I stole that from Dickens but it makes the right beginning for my letter to you. Life is full of paradox and contradiction, like being invited to a kind of party for a young man with advanced cancer. Cancer isn’t something to celebrate but the life of the boy who has it is. His name is Brian Mammen.
About two years ago Brian was diagnosed with bone cancer in his right leg. He was treated. A rough chemo ride, several surgeries and a prosthetic later Brian seemed to be out of danger and with a bright future awaiting him. In what was to be a “last” screening this spring to give him the all clear sign, something showed up. Another large tumor was found. This time it was in his left shoulder.
Brian has faced two rounds of excruciating chemo treatments since his reoccurrence. Statistics are frankly not good for Brian. However, we will not speculate on the future nor exclude the divine power of God to heal him. We will do what we should all be doing anyway: living each day that Good give us fully and confidently.
To assist Brian and his family to live each day in this way, we are holding a dinner/auction on June 11th 2006 at our church, St. John Lutheran. We are located in Covina at 304 E. Covina Blvd. (between Citrus and Barranca). The purpose is to raise money to help the Mammens through our Family Assistance Fund. Their needs are many.
You can help in one or more of the following ways:
1. Come to the dinner and bid on auctioned items. It’s going to be a lot of fun.
Tickets cost $10.00 per person. Auctioned items will be from low to high allowing all to participate.
2. Sell tickets for the event to friends. People do not need to attend the dinner. All attending are asked to RSVP by June 5th at the church office: (626) 332- 3142.
3. Otherwise make a money donation and ask friends and co-workers to donate to our effort. No amount is too big or too small. Checks are to be made out to St. John Family Assistance Fund.
4. Donate a product or service for our auction. A letter of donation will be provided by our church office. New items please unless legitimate antiques.
Brian’s cancer is not a good time. But the love, prayers and support we can fill each of his days with will “work together for good.” Please help. Don’t set this aside. A good time is guaranteed for all! Many thanks in advance.
In Christ,
Pastor Patrick Curley
